Choice of Medium

I normally work using mixed media - gouache, coloured pencil, pastel and ink - layering these within each artwork which I find gives depth and life to a painting, particularly pet portraits as fur works particularly well in these mediums.

Lettering may have some gold leafing added if the design requires it.

However occasionally a particular subject may suit something different, or you may wish for something different and I will happily discuss the options available with you and which may suit the subject matter best. You will be able to make the final selection.

Pencil

Pencil drawings are on high quality white paper and I leave the background white.

Coloured pencil

Coloured pencil drawings are on high quality white paper. Coloured pencils do not give the same detail or depth of colour as paint or pastels, and I tend to use them in a slightly more ‘sketchy’ way. This option is not available for miniature or small head studies.

Pastel

Pastel drawings are on pastel paper, and this will either be white or light grey, depending on the colour of the subjects. This option is not available for miniature or small head studies. Please note that I am unable to post unframed pastel drawings as they would smudge and be damaged in the post, and I do not recommend using a fixative as I feel that this dulls and flattens the drawing. If you would like an unframed pastel drawing, you would need to be able to collect it in person.

Gouache / mixed media

Gouache (an opaque watercolour paint) and mixed media paintings are on high quality white paper and I leave the background white unless a light colour wash will highlight the subjects.
